Fly With Me...
I know heartbreak. What it means to stare out of an empty window imagining yourself playing catch with a father that I could only imagine. I know salt-water pillows that were never too busy to catch my adolescent tears. I know depression looks like a middle aged African American woman with three-daughters, I call her mom. I know hunger tastes like a whole bunch of broken promises stuck on replay in your stomach. I know relentless, is a hard earned lesson I never wanted to have to learn.
I know Track and Field was never a dream of mine. I never had time for a dream. Dreams don’t pay bills, put food on the table, or get you into college. And when your only parent is battling depression, you may wish you were in a dream but you spend enough time not waking up and you soon figure it out...
I know work. Hard work, drive, relentlessness, and faith are the only thing’s I could ever afford to believe in. And when I left my family at the age of 16 to move to Texas, faith was all I had. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” And I was just hoping that move would give me a future
All glory to God, it did. I graduated from Duncanville HS in Dallas, Tx with a full athletic scholarship waiting for me at the University of Arizona. I felt free, invincible, relentless. I was determined to be great, and this ladies and gentlemen was the day I started dreaming. I went on to make history as the first collegiate high jumper to win three consecutive indoor and outdoor individual NCAA Championship titles. On the international level I became the first Female American high jumper to medal in an Olympic Games since Louise Ritter in 1988, and with my Silver Medal in the IAAF World Championships the following year, I became one of the most decorated Female American high jumpers to date. Through High Jump I learned that with Christ, I don’t need wings to fly. So fly with me, and lets be great together
